The Henderson Middle School Chess Team Fund was established as a sub-fund through the El Paso Independent School District Foundation (EPISD). The fund was created to financially help with travel and accommodations for the school’s Chess Team when they participate in national competitions. The Chess Team has qualified to advance to state and national tournaments every year. The team and its supporters work hard to fundraise enough money for all qualifiers to make the trip.

“We have economically disadvantaged students, many from single-parent households,” says Renee De Santos, EPISD Education Foundation Executive Director. “Saul Ramirez, the chess coach, has created a chess dynasty.   He needs funds to grow the program and give students more opportunities to compete at the national level,” she added.

Earlier this month, the team and individual player received recognition at the United States Chess Federation’s National Junior High Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
